Which type is best suited for you? Solid tints can be applied to almost any lens. A solid tint is the same intensity all throughout the lens, and is an effective and low cost sunglass option. Gradient tinting is a fashionable version of tinted lenses. These lenses are dark at the top, and gradually fade to lighter at the bottom of the lens. Gradient tinting can also be applied to almost any lens. Photochromic lenses, such as Transitions®, are clear indoors. Outside, the lenses will turn dark. The darkening is activated by UV rays from the sun. Unfortunately, these lenses do not work very well while driving a car, because the windshield will block much of the UV rays. Also, a photochromic lens can only tint to 73% darkness at the most. This may not be enough for people who are sensitive to bright sunlight.
